Info concerning BHCC phlebotomy training, registering for required degree courses, and taking free practice exams online. Whether you are considering an associates degree (CNA, LVN, or LPN), or a bachelor of science in nursing (RN), you will find many doors opening after graduation. If you complete the phlebotomy training program, for example, there are a variety of nursing concentrations that may appeal to you such as medical lab training, the CNA program, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the nursing department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of phlebotomy training requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained phlebotomists, and of qualified medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for BHCC.

Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations. Accredited phlebotomy training programs are available from community colleges, vocational schools, or technical schools. These programs usually take less than 1 year to complete, including classes in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and laboratory work, and lead to a phlebotomy certificate or diploma.

Further, phlebotomists must learn specific procedures on how to identify, label, and track blood samples. The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Health Career Association (NHA), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and the American Medical Technologists (AMT) offer Phlebotomy Technician certifications. The average annual salary for trained phlebotomists was $31,630 in May 2015, and employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 25 percent over the next 10 years, much faster than average.

Surgical Technologist Training

Surgical technologists, also called operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations. They prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and help doctors during surgeries. Surgical technologists typically need a postsecondary certificate or an associate's degree. The average wage for surgical technologists was $44,330 in May 2015, and employment prospects are projected to increase by 15% yearly. Many community colleges and vocational schools, as well as some hospitals, have accredited programs in surgical technology. Surgical technologists are trained in the care and safety of patients, sterilization techniques, how to set up technical or robotic equipment, and preventing infections.

Certification through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting allows the use of the title Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). Certification through the National Center for Competency Testing allows the use of the title Tech in Surgery - Certified (NCCT). The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants, and the American Board of Surgical Assistants offer certification for surgical assistants.

Most clinical studies pose the risk of minor discomfort, although some study participants experience complications that require medical attention. In rare cases, participants have been seriously injured or have died resulting from their participation in trials of experimental therapies. The specific risks associated with a research protocol are described in detail in the informed consent document, which participants are required to sign before participating in research. Also, a member of the research team must explain the major risks of participating in a study. Before deciding to participate, carefully consider all possible risks and benefits.
