Get info about Aquinas College phlebotomy training, registering in a technical degree program, and taking free tests online. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing job areas, and for good reason. As the population ages, medical care will continue to expand. If you complete the phlebotomy training program, for example, there are a variety of nursing concentrations that may appeal to you such as medical lab training, the CNA program, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the nursing department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of phlebotomy training requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained phlebotomists, and of qualified medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Aquinas College.

Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations. Accredited phlebotomy training programs are available from community colleges, vocational schools, or technical schools. These programs usually take less than 1 year to complete, including classes in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and laboratory work, and lead to a phlebotomy certificate or diploma.

Further, phlebotomists must learn specific procedures on how to identify, label, and track blood samples. The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Health Career Association (NHA), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and the American Medical Technologists (AMT) offer Phlebotomy Technician certifications. The average annual salary for trained phlebotomists was $31,630 in May 2015, and employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 25 percent over the next 10 years, much faster than average.

Cancer Treatment Therapy

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. If detected early enough, the five-year survival rate is 90% or higher, although individual prognosis depends on the type of cancer, the stage of development when detected, and the treatments prescribed. The two most common types of breast cancer are ductal carcinoma, where tumors form in the cells of the milk ducts, and lobular carcinoma, which occurs in the milk-producing glands. Detection and therapy may include digital mammography, ultrasound, biopsy, chemotherapy and alternative radiation therapy.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, according to the American Cancer Society. The prostate gland is located below the bladder and surrounds part of the urethra. Enlargement of the prostate can be one of the early warning signs of prostate cancer. In the early stages, the patient may notice discomfort in urination. For men who are 50 and older, the most effective way to detect prostate cancer is through screening tests such as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, or the minimally invasive ultrasound imaging procedure. The National Cancer Institute leads a national effort to reduce suffering and death due to cancer.
